The Brief
The conversion of an industrial unit into a flexible space for modern working. The University of Hull is a higher education establishment with an esteemed history of over 80 years and champion the importance of continued learning. Domino Interiors worked on the conversion of an industrial unit into a flexible space for modern working. This would create an entirely new facility for the university out of a building that had become superfluous and a bit of an eyesore over the years.
Transforming the old unit into a space befitting a modern and forward-thinking university...
The industrial unit needed extensive renovations, as its windows required repairs, the locations of the toilets needed to be changed, and there were multiple other considerations required in order to effectively modernise the building. This gave us the opportunity to apply our wide-ranging knowledge and expertise to transform the old unit into a space befitting a modern and forward-thinking university.
The Challenges
The unit needed to be thoroughly refurbished from the ground up so that it would perform well for its users no matter which business group or department was using it. In addition to applying our creative powers to maximum effect, Domino also had to factor in a new data supply and civil works, which demonstrates our flexibility, expertise and attention to detail.
The Outcome
As well as altering the location of the toilets, the building needed to be reimagined so that it could become a flexible working space that accommodates different types of users and requirements on a daily basis. To ensure that the end result would be adaptable and welcoming, Domino designed and installed a new entrance door, kitchen area, breakout room, office facilities, toilets and meeting rooms.
Each of these areas received new furniture, décor and floor-to-ceiling glazing, plus the unit was fitted with an access ramp to ensure it could be used by the entire student population. The result is an inviting, inspiring and versatile space where students and staff can study, create, discuss, present, brainstorm, and break boundaries without being limited by their built environment.
